Soluble in hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate and other organic solvents. In water or ethanol solution is decomposed into bismuth oxychloride precipitation.

pure ammonia is introduced into the reaction equipment containing bismuth metal to remove air, and the equipment is dried at the same time. Then chlorine gas is introduced and the temperature is raised, and the bismuth chloride produced by the reaction is sublimated, the crude bismuth chloride can be obtained by cooling and condensation, and the crude product can be further purified by sublimation.

Bismuth(III) chloride Vetec(TM) reagent grade - Introduction
It has the smell of hydrogen chloride and is soluble. When heated, it volatilizes and sublimates at about 430°C. Decomposes into bismuth oxychloride in water, which is soluble in hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, anhydrous ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate.
